Introduction

A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896–1977), known to his disciples as Srila Prabhupada, stands as one of the most influential spiritual ambassadors of India's ancient Vedic culture to the modern world. Born Abhay Charan De in Calcutta on September 1, 1896, during the auspicious occasion of Nandotsava (the festival celebrating Krishna's birth), he was named after the great devotee Abhay Charan, reflecting his family's deep Vaishnava roots. His father, Gour Mohan De, a devout cloth merchant, prayed daily that his son would become a great devotee of Radharani — a prayer that would find extraordinary fulfillment decades later. Educated at the prestigious Scottish Churches' College in Calcutta, young Abhay was exposed to both British colonial education and the vibrant Bengali Renaissance, yet his heart remained anchored in the bhakti traditions of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. In 1922, a life-altering meeting with his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura — the founder of the Gaudiya Math and a towering figure in the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya sampradaya — ignited his lifelong mission. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati instructed him: "Preach the message of Lord Chaitanya in the English language to the Western world." This directive became the compass of Prabhupada's life.

Significance

The spiritual significance of Srila Prabhupada's mission cannot be overstated. He single-handedly transplanted the esoteric, monotheistic bhakti tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism — rooted in the Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, and Chaitanya-charitamrita — into the heart of the materialistic West during the turbulent 1960s. Arriving in New York in 1965 at age 69, with barely $7, a trunk of books, and a heart full of faith, he began teaching in a storefront on the Lower East Side. From that humble beginning, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) grew into a global confederation of over 800 temples, farm communities, schools, and restaurants across six continents. Prabhupada's genius lay in presenting Krishna consciousness not as an exotic Eastern religion but as a universal science of the soul — sanatan-dharma — accessible to anyone regardless of race, nationality, or prior belief. He emphasized the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra (Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare) as the yuga-dharma for Kali-yuga, citing scriptural authority from the Kali-santarana Upanishad and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's own example. His translations and commentaries — especially Bhagavad-gita As It Is (now in over 80 languages), the 18-volume Srimad-Bhagavatam, and the 17-volume Chaitanya-charitamrita — remain the gold standard for authentic Vedic literature in English, praised by scholars like A. L. Basham and Thomas Hopkins for their fidelity and devotional depth.

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Meaning: O Lord Krishna, O energy of the Lord (Radha), please engage me in Your loving devotional service. This mantra is the great mantra for deliverance in Kali-yuga, as stated in the Kali-santarana Upanishad.

Guidelines

  • Follow the four regulative principles: no meat-eating, no illicit sex, no gambling, no intoxication (including tea, coffee, tobacco, alcohol)
  • Chant a minimum of 16 rounds (1,728 names) of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra daily on japa beads
  • Rise early (preferably by 4:00 AM) for mangala-arati and morning sadhana
  • Read Srila Prabhupada's books daily — at least 30 minutes
  • Offer all food to Krishna before eating (prasadam only)
  • Wear Tulasi kanthi mala and apply tilaka (Urdhva-pundra) daily
  • Attend weekly Sunday feast program at local ISKCON temple or home gathering
  • Observe Ekadashi fasting (from grains and beans) twice monthly
  • Participate in book distribution and preaching activities regularly
  • Maintain celibacy (brahmachari) or regulated married life (grihastha) according to ashram

Do's

  • Approach Prabhupada's teachings with humility and faith (shraddha)
  • Associate with serious devotees (sat-sanga) who follow his instructions
  • Distribute his books widely — he called them 'the basis of our movement'
  • Serve the deity and Vaishnavas with love and respect
  • Keep a daily spiritual diary to track chanting, reading, and seva
  • Celebrate his appearance day (Vyasa Puja) and disappearance day with festivals
  • Support ISKCON's farms, goshalas, and educational projects
  • Teach children Krishna consciousness through gurukula or home schooling

Don'ts

  • Do not manufacture personal interpretations contrary to Prabhupada's purports
  • Do not criticize other Vaishnava sampradayas or bona fide spiritual paths
  • Do not neglect japa chanting or reduce rounds without valid reason
  • Do not accept disciples or give initiation without authorization from ISKCON's GBC
  • Do not use ISKCON resources for personal sense gratification
  • Do not engage in mundane politics or controversial social activism in Prabhupada's name
  • Do not disrespect the deity, guru, scripture, or Tulasi
  • Do not eat unoffered food (karmi-bhoga) or food cooked by non-devotees without offering

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Thinking Prabhupada's books are only for 'beginners' — they contain the deepest philosophy
  • Confusing ISKCON's institutional challenges with Prabhupada's pure teachings
  • Imitating external symbols (robes, tilaka) without internal transformation
  • Neglecting book distribution, which Prabhupada called 'the most important service'
  • Seeking initiation from unauthorized persons claiming to be his 'successors' outside ISKCON
  • Treating prasadam as ordinary food or wasting it
  • Using the maha-mantra mechanically without attention or offense-free chanting
  • Judging other devotees' advancement instead of seeing their service attitude

Regional Variations

  • In India: Emphasis on traditional Vedic rituals, Sanskrit chanting, and temple worship alongside book distribution
  • In North America/Europe: Focus on Sunday feasts, college preaching, Food for Life (prasadam distribution), and interfaith dialogue
  • In Latin America: Vibrant sankirtana parties, street festivals, and strong family-based communities
  • In Russia/Eastern Europe: Underground preaching history, now open temples with strong youth engagement
  • In Africa: Integration with local cultures, emphasis on farming communities (e.g., Bhaktivedanta Swami Gurukula in Kenya)
  • In Southeast Asia: Collaboration with local Buddhist/Hindu communities, temple tourism, and prison preaching

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Srila Prabhupada the founder of the Hare Krishna movement?
Yes, he founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in New York on July 13, 1966, to systematically propagate the teachings of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu worldwide. While the Hare Krishna mantra and Gaudiya Vaishnavism are ancient, Prabhupada created the modern global organization.
What is the significance of 'As It Is' in Bhagavad-gita As It Is?
Prabhupada titled his translation 'As It Is' to emphasize that he presented Krishna's words without speculative interpretation, distortion, or mental concoction — exactly as understood in the disciplic succession (parampara) from Krishna Himself.
How many books did Prabhupada write?
He authored over 80 volumes, including complete translations with commentaries of Bhagavad-gita (1 vol), Srimad-Bhagavatam (18 vols), Chaitanya-charitamrita (17 vols), and numerous smaller books like Nectar of Devotion, Nectar of Instruction, and Teachings of Lord Chaitanya.
What is the guru-parampara in ISKCON?
The disciplic succession in ISKCON traces from Krishna → BrahmaNarada → Vyasa → Madhvacharya → ... → Chaitanya Mahaprabhu → Six Gosvamis → ... → Bhaktivinoda Thakura → Gaurakishora Dasa Babaji → Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura → A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
Can anyone become a disciple of Prabhupada today?
Yes, through ISKCON's current initiating gurus who act as his representatives (ritvik or diksha gurus). One receives initiation (diksha) from a living guru in the line, who connects the disciple to Prabhupada and the parampara. Prabhupada remains the Founder-Acharya and preeminent siksha-guru (instructing spiritual master) for all.
