शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम्। प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये॥ विघ्नेश्वराय वरदाय सुरप्रियाय लम्बोदराय सकलाय जगद्धिताय। नागाननाय श्रुतियज्ञविभूषिताय गौरीसुताय गणनाथ नमो नमस्ते॥
Transliteration
śuklāmbaradharaṁ viṣṇuṁ śaśivarṇaṁ caturbhujam। prasannavadanaṁ dhyāyet sarvavighnopaśāntaye॥ vighneśvarāya varadāya surapriyāya lambodarāya sakalāya jagaddhitāya। nāgānanāya śrutiyajñavibhūṣitāya gaurīsutāya gaṇanātha namo namaste॥
Meaning / Translation
We meditate upon the Lord dressed in white garments, all-pervading, effulgent like the moon, four-armed, and with a serene, pleasant countenance, to pacify all obstacles. Salutations unto Vighneshvara, the giver of boons, beloved of the gods, large-bellied, complete in Himself, the benefactor of the universe, elephant-faced, adorned with Vedic wisdom and sacrifices, the son of Gauri, O leader of celestial attendants, we bow to You again and again.

छन्दः पादौ तु वेदस्य हस्तौ कल्पोऽथ पठ्यते। ज्योतिषामयनं चक्षुर्निरुक्तं श्रोत्रमुच्यते॥ शिक्षा घ्राणं तु वेदस्य मुखं व्याकरणं स्मृतम्। तस्मात्साङ्गमधीत्यैव ब्रह्मलोके महीयते॥
Transliteration
chandaḥ pādau tu vedasya hastau kalpo'tha paṭhyate। jyotiṣāmayanaṁ cakṣurniruktaṁ śrotramucyate॥ śikṣā ghrāṇaṁ tu vedasya mukhaṁ vyākaraṇaṁ smṛtam। tasmātsāṅgamadhītyaiva brahmaloke mahīyate॥
Meaning / Translation
Chandas (meter) represents the feet of the Veda Purusha, Kalpa (rituals) the hands, Jyotisha (astronomy and astrology) the eyes, and Nirukta (etymology) the ears. Shiksha (phonetics) represents the nose, and Vyakarana (grammar) is remembered as the mouth. Therefore, by studying the Vedas together with all these six auxiliary limbs, one attains honor and liberation in the highest realm of Brahman.

पञ्चसंवत्सरमयं युगाध्यक्षं प्रजापतिम्। दिनर्त्वयनमासाङ्गं प्रणम्य शिरसा शुचिः॥ प्रणम्य शिरसा कालमभिवाद्य सरस्वतीम्। कालज्ञानं प्रवक्ष्यामि लगधस्य महात्मनः॥
Transliteration
pañcasaṁvatsaramayaṁ yugādhyakṣaṁ prajāpatim। dinartvayanamāsāṅgaṁ praṇamya śirasā śuciḥ॥ praṇamya śirasā kālamabhivādya sarasvatīm। kālajñānaṁ pravakṣyāmi lagadhasya mahātmanaḥ॥
Meaning / Translation
Being pure in mind and body, bowing one's head with reverence before Prajapati, the supreme Lord of the five-year Yuga cycle, whose limbs are the days, seasons, solar solstices, and months. Bowing down with respect before Kala (Eternal Time) and revering Devi Saraswati (goddess of wisdom), I expound the sacred science of time as revealed by the great sage Lagadha.
ज्योतिष प्रयोजनम् (The Purpose and Significance of Jyotisha)

वेदा हि यज्ञार्थमभिप्रवृत्ताः कालानुपूर्व्या विहिताश्च यज्ञाः। तस्मादिदं कालविधानशास्त्रं यो ज्योतिषं वेद स वेद यज्ञान्॥
Transliteration
vedā hi yajñārthamabhipravṛttāḥ kālānupūrvyā vihitāśca yajñāḥ। tasmādidaṁ kālavidhānaśāstraṁ yo jyotiṣaṁ veda sa veda yajñān॥
Meaning / Translation
The Vedas have indeed manifested for the performance of sacred Yagnas (rituals), and Yagnas are ordained to be performed according to the precise order of time. Therefore, one who understands Jyotisha, the sacred science governing time, truly comprehends the purpose and fruits of all sacrifices.
शास्त्र श्रेष्ठता (The Supreme Position of Jyotisha Among Vedangas)

यथा शिखा मयूराणां नागानां मणयो यथा। तद्वद्वेदाङ्गशास्त्राणां गणितं मूर्ध्नि वर्तते॥
Transliteration
yathā śikhā mayūrāṇāṁ nāgānāṁ maṇayo yathā। tadvadvedāṅgaśāstrāṇāṁ gaṇitaṁ mūrdhni vartate॥
Meaning / Translation
Just as the crest crowns the head of peacocks, and the brilliant jewel rests upon the hoods of serpents, even so does Ganita (the mathematical and astronomical foundation of Jyotisha) stand at the supreme apex of all Vedanga sciences.

नमः सूर्याय शान्ताय सर्वरोगनिवारिणे। आयुरारोग्यमैश्वर्यं देहि देव जगत्पते॥ गुरुर्बृहस्पतिः श्रेष्ठो ज्ञानविज्ञानपारगः। सर्वविद्याप्रदं नित्यं ध्यायेम ज्योतिषां पतिम्॥
Transliteration
namaḥ sūryāya śāntāya sarvaroganivāriṇe। āyurārogyamaiśvaryaṁ dehi deva jagatpate॥ gururbṛhaspatiḥ śreṣṭho jñānavijñānapāragaḥ। sarvavidyāpradaṁ nityaṁ dhyāyema jyotiṣāṁ patim॥
Meaning / Translation
Salutations to Surya, the peaceful Sun, the healer of all afflictions; grant us long life, vibrant health, and spiritual abundance, O Lord of the Universe. We constantly meditate upon Brihaspati, the foremost preceptor of the gods, master of supreme knowledge and science, the granter of all branches of sacred wisdom, and the guiding light among planetary lights.
