Ekadashi is the eleventh lunar day (tithi) of each fortnight in the Hindu calendar. It occurs twice a month, once in the waxing (Shukla) and once in the waning (Krishna) paksha, and is traditionally observed as a day of fasting and devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Significance of Ekadashi
Fasting on Ekadashi is regarded as one of the most meritorious vratas in the Vaishnava tradition. Each Ekadashi carries its own name and story (katha), and observing it is believed to purify the mind and body and bring spiritual merit. The fast is broken the next morning during Dwadashi, within the prescribed parana window.
How to observe Ekadashi
Observers abstain from grains and beans; many keep a partial or waterless (nirjala) fast according to their capacity and family tradition. The day is spent in prayer, recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama and chanting. Always break the fast within the parana time shown in that day's panchang.
