Chota Char Dham — Yamunotri Gangotri Kedarnath Badrinath Complete Guide

Introduction

The Chota Char Dham, which translates to 'the small four abodes,' is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage circuit located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. This revered journey encompasses four distinct shrines dedicated to different deities, each nestled in the breathtaking Himalayan mountains. The pilgrimage sites include Yamunotri, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna; Gangotri, the source of the River Ganges and the abode of Goddess Ganga; Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the home of Lord Shiva; and Badrinath, a sacred site for Lord Vishnu. The Chota Char Dham Yatra is considered a smaller version of the larger Char Dham pilgrimage that includes Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, and Rameswaram, spanning across India. The origins of the Chota Char Dham can be traced back to the ancient Hindu scriptures, such as the Puranas and the Mahabharata, where these sites are mentioned as sacred and powerful. For instance, Yamunotri is believed to be the birthplace of the Yamuna River, while Gangotri is revered as the source of the Ganges.
