What You'll Need

How to Prepare

1. 1Sankalpa of Purification: Days prior to embarking on the Yatra, observe internal discipline, sattvic diet, and mental withdrawal from worldly disputes.
2. 2Brahma Muhurta Awakening: On the designated Snan day, wake during the auspicious hours (around 3:30 AM - 4:30 AM) chanting the sacred names of the holy rivers.
3. 3Physical Cleanliness: Take an ordinary cleansing wash before proceeding to the sacred riverbank to ensure one enters the Tirtha in external purity.
4. 4Mental Alignment and Silence: Maintain silence (Mauna) or repeat the name of your Ishta Devata while walking to the Ghats, meditating on the presence of the cosmic Amrita.
5. 5Procurement of Offerings: Keep earthen lamps, flowers, and Arghya ingredients ready in an eco-friendly manner, avoiding all plastic and chemical contaminants.

How to Celebrate

1. 1Pranam to the Tirtha: Upon reaching the edge of the sacred river, touch the water respectfully with the right hand and touch the forehead, praying for permission to bathe and seeking forgiveness for stepping into the holy body of the deity.
2. 2Aachaman and Anga Nyasa: Take three sips of clean water invoking Achyuta, Ananta, and Govinda, purifying the internal energy channels.
3. 3Sankalpa (Solemn Vow): Hold water, Akshata, Kusha grass, and a coin in the right palm facing east or north, reciting the Gotra, family name, location, and intent to perform the Kumbh Snan for inner purification and Moksha.
4. 4River Invocation (Tirtha Avahana): Chant the Ganga Avahana mantra to invoke the spiritual presence of all seven sacred rivers into the water before stepping in.
5. 5The Three Dips (Trisuparna Snana): Gently immerse oneself completely underwater three times: the first dip dissolves sins of the physical body, the second cleanses mental agitation, and the third purifies subtle karmic impressions.
6. 6Surya Arghya: Stand waist-deep facing the rising Sun, hold water in the cupped palms or anjali mudra, and pour the water back into the river while reciting the Gayatri Mantra or the Surya Mantra.
7. 7Pitru and Deva Tarpan: Offer water mixed with black sesame seeds (for ancestors) and Kusha grass to honor devas, rishis, and deceased ancestors, praying for their spiritual peace and elevation.
8. 8Deepa Dana (Floating the Lamp): Light the earthen ghee lamp, offer flowers to the sacred river, and gently release it upon the current as a symbol of surrendering one's ego and darkness to the cosmic flow.
9. 9Vastra Parivartan and Dana: Change immediately into dry, modest traditional clothing on the bank. Conclude the ritual by distributing food, clothes, or coins to needy individuals, ascetics, or learned Brahmins on the riverbank.

Mantras

Observance Rules

• •Observe complete Brahmacharya (celibacy in thought, word, and deed) throughout the pilgrimage duration.
• •Consume strictly Sattvic Ahara: avoid onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and fermented items; fasting on the primary Snan day is highly praised.
• •Practice Mauna (holy silence) or Vak-Shuddhi: refrain from harsh speech, gossip, worldly arguments, and anger during the stay at the Tirtha.
• •Sleep on the ground or a simple natural mat if staying in the Mela grounds to cultivate humility and dispassion.
• •Engage daily in Satsanga, hearing scripture readings, and circumambulating sacred shrines (Parikrama).

Do's

• ✓Maintain strict reverence for the river: treat the water as the physical incarnation of divine motherly grace.
• ✓Honor and bow respectfully before sadhus, mahatmas, and sannyasins without disrupting their internal meditation.
• ✓Give unconditional charity (Dana) according to your capacity—grain, warm clothing, and financial help.
• ✓Dispose of all personal items, clothes, and ritual remains responsibly in designated eco-bins away from the flowing water.
• ✓Carry home a small container of sacred river water (Kumbhajal) for home purification and daily prayers.

Don'ts

• ✗Do not use soaps, detergents, chemical shampoos, or plastic items in the sacred river.
• ✗Do not wash dirty clothing directly in the bathing ghats where other pilgrims are immersing.
• ✗Avoid entering the designated procession routes or reserved ghats meant for the Akhada Shahi Snan (Peshwai).
• ✗Never spit, urinate, or discard biological waste into or near the sanctified river banks.
• ✗Avoid commercial bargaining or trivializing the festival into purely leisure tourism.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• •Bathing hurriedly like an ordinary routine bath without reciting the mental Sankalpa or water mantras.
• •Throwing non-biodegradable offerings like plastic bags or synthetic flower packaging into the river.
• •Getting caught in crowded stampede zones out of haste; spiritual fruit depends on inner surrender, not physical speed.
• •Disrespecting the customs and privacy of diverse ascetic sects (such as the Naga Sadhus) by intrusive photography.
• •Forgetting to perform ancestor libation (Tarpan), which is one of the highest duties during a Tirtha Snan.

Regional Variations

• •Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh): Known as the king of Tirthas (Tirtharaj); the Snan occurs at the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, holding pre-eminence during Magha month.
• •Haridwar (Uttarakhand): Situated where the Ganga enters the northern plains from the Shivalik hills; celebrated when Jupiter is in Aquarius and the Sun enters Aries.
• •Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): Known as the Simhastha Kumbh, taking place along the Shipra River when Jupiter enters the sign of Leo (Simha) near the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.
• •Nashik-Trimbakeshwar (Maharashtra): Celebrated along the Godavari River when Jupiter enters Leo; Vaishnavite sadhus bathe at Nashik and Shaivite Goswami sadhus bathe upstream at Trimbakeshwar.
