Yama (Ethical Restraints)

Original

यम का पालन सदा करो, अहिंसा सत्य का मार्ग धरो। अस्तेय, ब्रह्मचर्य, अपरिग्रह ज्ञान, सदा बढ़ाएँ आत्म-सम्मान।

Transliteration

Yama ka paalan sada karo, ahimsa satya ka maarg dharo. Asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha gyaan, sada badhaayein aatma-samman.

Meaning / Translation

Always follow the Yamas: walk the path of non-violence and truth. Through non-stealing, celibacy, and non-possessiveness, always increase your self-respect.

Niyama (Self-Discipline)

नियम की शक्ति को जानो, शौच संतोष तप को मानो। स्वाध्याय और ईश्वर प्रणिधान, पा लो जीवन का सच्चा ज्ञान।

Transliteration

Niyam ki shakti ko jaano, shauch santosh tap ko maano. Swadhyaya aur Ishwar pranidhaan, paa lo jeevan ka saccha gyaan.

Meaning / Translation

Know the power of Niyamas: embrace purity, contentment, and austerity. Through self-study and surrender to the Divine, attain the true wisdom of life.

Asana & Pranayama (Posture & Breath)

स्थिर सुख के लिए आसन साधो, प्राण वायु का नियम साधो। प्राणायाम से जीवन में आए प्राण, शांत हो जाए मन और ध्यान।

Transliteration

Sthir sukh ke liye aasan saadho, praan vaayu ka niyam saadho. Pranayama se jeevan mein aaye praan, shaant ho jaaye man aur dhyaan.

Meaning / Translation

Practice Asanas for stability and comfort; master the regulation of life force. Through Pranayama, life is energized, and the mind and meditation become calm.

Pratyahara & Dharana (Withdrawal & Concentration)

प्रत्याहार से इंद्रिय को रोको, धारणा से चित्त को तोलो। बाह्य जगत से मन को हटाओ, एकाग्रता की ज्योति जलाओ।

Transliteration

Pratyahara se indriya ko roko, dharana se chitt ko tolo. Baahya jagat se man ko hatao, ekagrata ki jyoti jalao.

Meaning / Translation

Withdraw the senses through Pratyahara; balance the mind through Dharana. Turn the mind away from the external world and ignite the flame of concentration.

Dhyana & Samadhi (Meditation & Absorption)

ध्यान की धारा जब बहती जाए, समाधि की अवस्था मिल जाए। आत्मा का परमात्मा से मिलन, अष्टाङ्ग योग है परम सुख का साधन।

Transliteration

Dhyana ki dhaara jab behti jaaye, Samadhi ki avastha mil jaaye. Aatma ka Paramatma se milan, Ashtanga Yoga hai param sukh ka saadhan.

Meaning / Translation

When the flow of Dhyana becomes continuous, the state of Samadhi is attained. The union of the individual soul with the Supreme Soul; Ashtanga Yoga is the means to ultimate bliss.
