Meaning / Translation

This is the sacred Kalash Sthapana (Ghatasthapana) mantra chanted at the beginning of Sharad Navratri to invoke the Divine Mother Durga into the consecrated pot (kalash). It begins with the universal Vyahritis (Bhur Bhuvah Svah) and the Durga Bija Mantra (Aim Hrim Klim Chamundayai Vichche). It then offers salutations to the presiding deities of the sacrifice, the elements (water, earth, fire, air, space), all gods, the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva), the guardians of directions, the avataras of Vishnu, and finally the three supreme forms of the Goddess: Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati, and Mahakali. The concluding verse is the famous 'Sarvamangala Mangalye' from Devi Mahatmya, praising the Goddess as the auspiciousness of all auspiciousness, the consort of Shiva, the fulfiller of all aims, the refuge, the three-eyed one, Gauri, and Narayani.

Salutations to Goddess Chandika (Durga). This is the opening verse of the Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya), the most sacred text recited during Navratri. It introduces King Suratha, a mighty ruler born in the lineage of Svavarochisha Manu (the eighth Manu), setting the stage for the narration of the Goddess's glories by Sage Medhas to the king and a merchant named Samadhi. Reciting this text during the nine nights of Sharad Navratri is considered the highest worship of Durga.
