Rigveda Mandal 1, Sukta 1

Original

अग्निमीळे पुरोहितं यज्ञस्य देवमृत्विजम्। होतारं रत्नधातमम्॥

Transliteration

Agnimīḷe purohitaṁ yajñasya devamṛtvijam. Hotāraṁ ratnadhātamam.

Meaning / Translation

I praise Agni, the priest of the sacrifice, the divine minister, who invokes the gods and offers them oblations.

Original

विश्वानि देव सवितर्दुरितानि परासुव। यद्भागं पूर्वियसो महिमानः॥

Transliteration

Viśvāni deva savitar duritāni parāsuva. Yadbhāgaṁ pūrvīyaso mahimānaḥ.

Meaning / Translation

Savitri, the god, dispels all evil and misfortune, and brings us good fortune and prosperity, just as the earlier generations had experienced his greatness.

Original

भूर्भुवः सुवः। तनुम् मनुर्विश्वातः। कण्वो यत् कवये ददाति॥

Transliteration

Bhūrbhuvaḥ suvaḥ. Tanum manurviśvātaḥ. Kaṇvo yat kavaye dadāti.

Meaning / Translation

The earth, the atmosphere, and the sky. The body is from Manu, and everything is from the sage Kanvas, who gives to the poet.

श्रेष्ठं विश्वारहं देवं सुरमानं यज्ञियम्। ज्योतिर्यज्ञादभिशोचं तं जन्म वृणोते स्वः॥

Transliteration

Śreṣṭhaṁ viśvārahaṁ devaṁ suramānaṁ yajñiyam. Jyotiryajñādabhiśocaṁ taṁ janma vṛṇote svaḥ.

Meaning / Translation

The most excellent, the most powerful god, worthy of worship, and the one who is the light of the sacrifice, is the one whom the gods choose for their own birth.
