Panchang and Tithi: The Sacred Hindu Almanac and Lunar Day System

Introduction

Significance

Auspicious Time

Required Samagri (Materials)

Preparation Steps

1. 1Obtain an authentic Panchang calculated for your specific geographic location (latitude/longitude) as Tithi timings vary by region
2. 2Clean the worship area and place the Panchang on a clean cloth or wooden stand
3. 3Light the lamp and incense, invoking the deities of time (Kala Bhairava, Surya, Chandra) and the Navagrahas
4. 4Sit in a comfortable posture (sukhasana or padmasana) facing east or north
5. 5Perform achamana (sipping water thrice while reciting mantras) and pranayama to purify body and mind
6. 6Offer flowers, akshata, chandan, and kumkum to the Panchang as a mark of reverence to the science of Jyotisha
7. 7Recite the opening prayer to Ganesha (Vakratunda Mahakaya) to remove obstacles in understanding the Panchang

Steps

1. 1Open the Panchang to the current date and identify the five angas: Tithi (with its start and end times in local time), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (with start/end times), Yoga, and Karana
2. 2Note the sunrise and sunset times for your location, as these define the boundaries of the civil day
3. 3Check for any special combinations: Siddha Yoga, Amrita Yoga, Marana Yoga, or inauspicious periods like Rahu Kala (1/8th of daytime), Yamaganda Kala, Gulika Kala
4. 4Identify if the day hosts any festival, vrat, or observance (Ekadashi, Pradosha, Sankashti, etc.) and note its specific rules
5. 5Determine the auspicious Muhurta windows for important activities: Abhijit Muhurta (midday), Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn), or specific Lagna-based Muhurtas
6. 6Record the daily Panchang details in your notebook along with planned activities aligned with the indications
7. 7Recite the Tithi-specific mantra or the mantra of the presiding deity of the day's Tithi/Nakshatra
8. 8Conclude with a prayer for wisdom to utilize time righteously (Kala Sadhana) and offer the merit to the Divine

Mantras

Do's

• ✓Consult a location-specific Panchang calculated by a qualified Siddhanti or reputable institution (e.g., Kashi Vishwanath Panchang, Sringeri Panchang, Vakya Panchang)
• ✓Begin the day by reviewing the Panchang during Brahma Muhurta to align activities with cosmic rhythms
• ✓Respect the two major month-reckoning systems: Amanta (month ends on Amavasya, followed in South India, Gujarat, Maharashtra) and Purnimanta (month ends on Purnima, followed in North India)
• ✓Observe Tithi-specific deities and mantras to deepen devotional connection with the lunar cycle
• ✓Use the Panchang for selecting Muhurta for all major life events: marriage, upanayana, griha pravesha, business launch, travel
• ✓Teach children to read basic Panchang elements (Tithi, Nakshatra, festival days) as part of cultural education

Don'ts

• ✗Do not use a Panchang calculated for a different timezone or region — Tithi start/end times shift with longitude
• ✗Do not ignore the distinction between 'Tithi at sunrise' (Udaya Tithi) and 'current Tithi' — festivals are usually determined by Udaya Tithi
• ✗Do not perform auspicious ceremonies during Rahu Kala, Yamaganda Kala, Gulika Kala, or Durmuhurta without remedial measures
• ✗Do not break Ekadashi fast during Hari Vasara (first 1/4 of Dwadashi) — wait for proper Parana time
• ✗Do not confuse the 27 Nakshatras with the 12 Rashis (zodiac signs) — they are different divisions of the ecliptic
• ✗Do not treat the Panchang as mere superstition; it is a precise astronomical and spiritual science (Jyotisha Vedanga)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• •Using a generic 'Indian calendar' app that doesn't show Tithi start/end times in local time
• •Assuming all of India follows the same festival date — regional differences can shift festivals by a day
• •Ignoring the 'Kshaya Tithi' (lost Tithi) and 'Vriddhi Tithi' (double Tithi) phenomena which affect vrat timing
• •Confusing the solar month (Sauramana) with the lunar month (Chandramana) for festival determination
• •Overlooking the importance of Yoga and Karana in Muhurta selection, focusing only on Tithi and Nakshatra
• •Not adjusting for Daylight Saving Time when using Panchang data from India for overseas locations

Regional Variations

• •North India (Purnimanta): Month begins after Purnima; festivals like Holi, Diwali dated accordingly
• •South India (Amanta): Month begins after Amavasya; Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam calendars follow this
• •Gujarat/Maharashtra: Amanta system but with unique festival dates (e.g., Diwali starts earlier with Vasu Baras)
• •Bengal/Odisha/Assam: Follow a solar calendar (Bangla, Odia, Assamese) for civil purposes but lunar for religious festivals
• •Kashmir: Uses the Saptarishi era and a unique lunar calendar with distinct festival timings
• •Tamil Nadu: Uses the Vakya Panchangam (based on Vakya Siddhanta) vs. Drik Panchangam (observational) debate
• •Kerala: Follows the Kollam era (Malayalam calendar) which is solar for months but integrates lunar Tithis for festivals
• •Diaspora communities: Must use location-specific Panchang (e.g., mypanchang.com, drikpanchang.com) for accurate timings
