Kalash Sthapana Mantra (Varuna Invocation)

Can Griha Pravesh be performed on a Saturday or Tuesday?▾
Traditionally, Saturday (Shanivar) and Tuesday (Mangalvar) are avoided for Griha Pravesh as they are ruled by Saturn and Mars — planets associated with delays, obstacles, and fire/accidents respectively. However, if an exceptionally strong lagna and nakshatra combination occurs on these days, some traditions permit it with additional Shanti pujas. Always consult your pandit.
What if we cannot move in on the exact muhurat due to unavoidable circumstances?▾
If the exact muhurat is missed, do not enter the house casually. Wait for the next available shubh muhurat (even if days later). In emergency, a 'symbolic entry' can be done at the muhurat by carrying the kalash and touching the threshold, then locking up until actual move. Never enter at an inauspicious time.
Is it necessary to perform Vastu Shanti before Griha Pravesh?▾
Vastu Shanti is highly recommended if: (1) the plot has Vastu doshas (irregular shape, missing corners, wrong slopes), (2) construction had accidents/deaths, (3) the land had inauspicious history, (4) family members have severe planetary afflictions. For Vastu-compliant new builds on clean land, simple Vastu puja during Griha Pravesh suffices.
Can a widow, divorcee, or single person perform Griha Pravesh alone?▾
Yes, absolutely. The householder (grihastha) concept includes single heads of household. The ritual can be performed by the individual with a pandit assisting. Some traditions suggest inviting a married couple (sumangali) to accompany for mangalya energy, but it is not mandatory. The deity's grace is not limited by marital status.
What about Griha Pravesh for a rented house vs owned house?▾
For owned house: full elaborate Griha Pravesh with all rituals. For rented house: a simplified 'Griha Pravesh' or 'Vastu Puja' is performed focusing on kalash sthapana, Ganesh puja, Vastu puja, and first cooking. The intensity differs but the principle of sanctifying the space remains. Some skip homa in rentals.
How long should we keep the lamps burning after Griha Pravesh?▾
Minimum: the first night (until next sunrise). Ideal: 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 nights continuously (akhand jyot). Many families keep a ghee lamp burning in the puja room permanently thereafter.
