Significance

Guruvayurappan is believed to be worshipped from the deity originally revered by Krishna's parents, brought here by Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu (the wind god) — hence the name Guruvayur. Countless miracle stories and the devotion of poets like Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, composer of the Narayaniyam, have made it a supreme Vaishnava centre. Devotees believe the Lord here is especially compassionate to the sincere and the suffering. It is one of the most spiritually vibrant temples of South India.

About

The ancient temple of Guruvayur enshrines a four-armed form of Vishnu-Krishna holding the conch, discus, mace and lotus, carved from a rare stone called Patala Anjanam. The temple is famed for its strict adherence to age-old rituals and traditions, with only Hindus permitted inside and a prescribed dress code for worshippers. Nearby, the Punnathur Kotta elephant sanctuary houses dozens of temple elephants dedicated to the Lord. Guruvayur is among the most popular venues in Kerala for weddings, rice-feeding ceremonies (choroonu) and other life rituals performed in the deity's presence.
