Devotees seek her grace for courage, protection and success.
The Tulja Bhavani temple at Tuljapur, built in the Hemadpanthi style with later additions, enshrines a swayambhu black-granite image of the fierce goddess Bhavani, a form of Durga. Revered as one of the 'three and a half' Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra, it has been a powerful centre of Devi worship for centuries. It is inseparable from the legend of Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha empire, who worshipped Bhavani as his protector and is said to have been blessed by her with the famous 'Bhavani Talwar' (sword). During Navratri, the temple overflows with devotees and grand rituals.
