Required Samagri (Materials)

Preparation Steps

1. 1Purify the ritual space with cow dung water, Ganga jal, and mantras
2. 2Establish the mandala/yantra for the deity with precise geometric measurements
3. 3Perform achamana (sipping water) and pranayama for self-purification

6. 6Arrange all samagri in designated positions per the specific Agama (e.g., Kamika, Pancharatra, Tantraraja)
7. 7Light the nanda deepa (eternal lamp) and establish fire in homa kunda if required
8. 8Perform bhuta shuddhi (purification of elements) and atma shuddhi (self-purification) through nyasa

Steps

1. 11. Sankalpa: Declare intention, time, place, lineage, and purpose of the ritual
2. 22. Ganapati Puja: Invoke Ganesha as Vighneshvara to remove obstacles
3. 33. Kshetra Palaka Puja: Honor the guardian deities of the space
4. 44. Guru Puja: Offer worship to the guru parampara and the Agama itself as embodiment of knowledge
5. 55. Pranapratishtha: Infuse life into the murti through mantra, mudra, and nyasa — transferring divine consciousness from the heart of the worshiper to the deity
6. 66. Shodashopachara or Panchopachara Puja: Offer 16 or 5 upacharas (services) — asana, padya, arghya, achamana, snana, vasra, yajnopavita, gandha, pushpa, dhupa, deepa, naivedya, tambula, dakshina, namaskara, pradakshina
7. 77. Mantra Japa: Recite the mula mantra of the deity with prescribed count (108, 1008, etc.) using mala
8. 88. Homa: Offer ahutis into the sacred fire with svaha, invoking the deity in the fire
9. 99. Purnahuti: Final offering marking completion
10. 1010. Pradakshina and Namaskara: Circumambulation and prostration
11. 1111. Prasada Distribution: Share sanctified offerings with all participants
12. 1212. Visarjana (if temporary): Respectfully withdraw the divine presence; for permanent murtis, conclude with shayana seva (putting deity to rest)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• •Performing rituals mechanically without bhava (devotion) and dhyana (meditation)
• •Incorrect pronunciation of mantras due to lack of proper Sanskrit training
• •Ignoring the specific agama's sequence (krama) and substituting personal preferences
• •Neglecting the preparatory purifications (bhuta shuddhi, achamana, pranayama)
• •Using the wrong yantra, mudra, or nyasa for the deity being worshiped
• •Overlooking the importance of guru kripa and parampara in efficacy of ritual
• •Confusing Smarta (Vedic) procedures with Agamic (Tantric) procedures
• •Failing to maintain the temple's ritual calendar and seasonal observances

Regional Variations
