Verse 1

Original

ਇਕ ਓਅੰਕਾਰ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Transliteration

Ika Oankaar Satinaam Karta Purakhu Nirbha'u Nirvair Akaal Moorat Ajooni Saibhng Gur Prasaadi.

Meaning / Translation

One Universal Creator God, One Name, The Creator, Complete in Himself, Without Fear, Without Enmity, Timeless Form, Unborn, Self-Existent, By the Grace of the Guru.

Verse 2

Original

ਸੋਚੈ ਸੋਚ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੋਛਾ ਆਪ ਹੋਛਾ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰੈ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

Transliteration

Sochai Soch Na Hovai Nankaa Hochaa Aap Hochaa Hee Jeev Vichaar Karai Kartaar Vich Jaanai Apaaru.

Meaning / Translation

Purification of the mind cannot be achieved by mere words, O Nanak; the mind is polluted, and it is the mind which considers itself to be wise and tries to know the Limitless Creator.

Verse 3

Original

ਸੋਚੈ ਮੰਦਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੁਚੈ ਰਹੇ ਸਦਾ ਹੋਛੇ ਹੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਜੀਵ ਮੁਕਦੇ ਜਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਾਰ ॥

Transliteration

Sochai Mandiaa Manmukh Nahi Nankaa Suchai Rehe Sadaa Hochae Hee Vichaar Karde Jeev Mukde Jamaan Di Haar.

Meaning / Translation

The self-willed individuals are polluted even when they try to purify themselves, O Nanak; on the other hand, those who are pure at heart remain pure, but the self-willed individuals continue to ponder and are ultimately defeated by the forces of death.

ਗੁਰੂ ਇਨ ਘਟਿਆਂ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਜਾਚਿਆ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਗਏ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਦੁਇ ਤੇ ਰਹਿਤ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥

Transliteration

Guru In Ghatiaan Boliya Jaachia Datar Prabhu Milia Hari Naam Dhiaaya Gaye Paap Punnd Duie Te Rahit Karaaya.

Meaning / Translation

By the Guru, these hearts have invoked and searched for the Giver Lord; the Lord has been met, and the Name of the Lord has been meditated upon; and the Guru has freed them from both vice and virtue.

ਆਪਣਾ ਸ ਮੁਕਾਇਆ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਿਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੀ ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥

Transliteration

Aapana Sa Mukaaya Guru Di Saran Piya Vaddbhaagee Manukh Janm Maran De Gerd Vich Paidaa Na Hoee Jeevaatma Da Naas Nahi Hunda.

Meaning / Translation

The very fortunate individuals who seek the refuge of the Guru have their self-conceit eliminated; they are not reborn and do not die, the soul does not perish.
