Verse 1

वासुदेव स्य निर्जला च या एकादशी प्रभावती । यथा प्रोक्ता पापनाशनी तेन मे वच्मि तामशृणु ।
Transliteration
Vāsudeva sya nirjala cha yā ekādaśī prabhāvatī. Yathā proktā pāpānāśanī tena me vachmi tāmashṛṇu.
Meaning / Translation
The Ekadashi that occurs during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the Moon) in the month of Jyeshtha is called Nirjala Ekadashi or Bhimseni Ekadashi. It is said to have the power to destroy all sins, and I will now describe it to you.

युधिष्ठिर उवाच । कृष्ण कृष्ण महाबाहो द्वादशी तिथिरनुत्तमा । एकादश्यास्तु महिमा यथा श्रुतं मया तव ।
Transliteration
Yudhiṣṭhira uvācha. Kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa mahābāho dvādaśī tithiranuttamā. Ekādaśyāstu mahimā yathā śruṭaṁ mayā tava.
Meaning / Translation
Yudhishthira said, 'Oh Krishna, Oh mighty-armed one, the twelfth day of the lunar fortnight is the best, but I have heard from you the glories of the Ekadashi day.'

एकादश्यास्तु व्रतमिदं निर्जलं परमाद्भुतम् । क्षुधा तृषा जलसंचयवान्स वै भक्तिपरायणः ।
Transliteration
Ekādaśyāstu vratamidaṁ nirjalaṁ paramādbhutam. Kṣudhā tṛṣā jalaścayavānsa vai bhaktiparāyaṇaḥ.
Meaning / Translation
The Nirjala Ekadashi fast is most wonderful and gives the best results. One who observes this fast without even drinking water, and feels hungry and thirsty, is a true devotee.

निर्जला तु ज्ञेया सा एकादशी यथा प्रोक्ता पापनाशनी । यथा कृतं श्राद्धं पितृभ्यः प्रेतेभ्यः कार्यमस्तु ।
Transliteration
Nirjalā tu jñeyā sā ekādaśī yathā proktā pāpānāśanī. Yathā kṛtaṁ śrāddhaṁ pitṛbhyaḥ pretebhyaḥ kāryamastu.
Meaning / Translation
The Nirjala Ekadashi is known to destroy all sins, and it is said that one who observes this fast gets the same results as one who performs a shraddha (a ritual for the ancestors) for the departed ancestors.

निर्जलामेकादशी व्रतं ये कुर्वन्ति मनुष्याः । तेषां पितरो भूतानि स्वर्गे मोदन्ते सह देवैः ।
Transliteration
Nirjalāmekādaśī vrataṁ ye kurvanti manuṣyāḥ. Teṣāṁ pitaro bhūtāni svargaṁ modante saha devaiḥ.
Meaning / Translation
Those who observe the Nirjala Ekadashi fast, their ancestors and other living beings rejoice in heaven along with the gods.
