Verse 1

Original

नमामि यमुनां देव्याम् पवित्रं पापनाशिनीम् । कृष्णप्रियां भक्तप्रियां शुक्लवर्णं सुशोभिनीम् ॥ १ ॥

Transliteration

Namāmi Yamunāṃ devyām pavitraṃ pāpanāśinīm | Kṛṣṇapriyāṃ bhaktapriyāṃ śuklavarṇaṃ suśobhinīm || 1 ||

Meaning / Translation

I bow to Goddess Yamuna, the most sacred one, the destroyer of sins. She is beloved by Lord Krishna, beloved by her devotees, and shines with a beautiful, radiant form.

Verse 2

कालिन्दी कालिनाथां कृष्णकान्तप्रियां सदा । भक्तवत्सला भक्तिप्रदां ज्ञानमयीं सुशोभिनीम् ॥ २ ॥

Transliteration

Kālindī kālināthāṃ kṛṣṇakāntapriyāṃ sadā | Bhaktavatsalā bhaktipradāṃ jñānamayīṃ suśobhinīm || 2 ||

Meaning / Translation

The Kalindi (Yamuna), the beloved of the Lord of Time, and eternally dear to Krishna. She is affectionate toward devotees, bestows pure devotion, and is the embodiment of divine wisdom.

नीलवर्णां सलिलां पावनं नित्यं सुधार्णवा । भक्तपोषककारिणीं कृष्णभक्तिप्रदायिनीम् ॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration

Nīlavarṇāṃ salilāṃ pāvanaṃ nityaṃ sudhārṇavā | Bhaktapoṣakakāriṇīṃ kṛṣṇabhaktipradāyinīm || 3 ||

Meaning / Translation

With deep blue waters, her flow is eternally pure and like nectar. She nourishes her devotees and is the great bestower of devotion to Lord Krishna.

Verse 4

वृंदावने विचरन्ती कृष्णक्रीडाविहारिणी । ब्रह्माण्डमण्डलात्तु श्रेष्ठं पावनं तीर्थरूपिणीम् ॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration

Vṛndāvane vicarantī kṛṣṇakrīḍāvihāriṇī | Brahmāṇḍamaṇḍalāttu śreṣṭhaṃ pāvanaṃ tīrtharūpiṇīm || 4 ||

Meaning / Translation

Wandering through the groves of Vrindavan, participating in the divine plays of Krishna, she is the most sacred pilgrimage site, superior even to all the realms of the universe.

Verse 5

पापनाशिनीं पुण्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशिनीम् । भक्तनदीममृतानन्दीं नमामि यमुनां सदा ॥ ५ ॥

Transliteration

Pāpanāśinīṃ puṇyaṃ sarvapāpapraṇāśinīm | Bhaktanadīmamṛtānandīṃ namāmi yamunāṃ sadā || 5 ||

Meaning / Translation

The destroyer of sins, the merit-giver, and the annihilator of all transgressions. I bow eternally to Goddess Yamuna, the river of devotees and the source of nectar-like bliss.

Verse 6

नित्यं दर्शनमात्रेण जन्मपापविनाशिनी । कौस्तुभमणिनामकं दिव्यदीप्तिं सुशोभिनीम् ॥ ६ ॥

Transliteration

Nityaṃ darśanamātreṇa janmapāpavinaśinī | Kaustubhamani nāmakaṃ divyadīptiṃ suśobhinīm || 6 ||

Meaning / Translation

Just by the act of seeing her daily, the sins of many lifetimes are destroyed. She shines with a divine brilliance, as bright as the celestial Kaustubha gem.

Verse 7

शरणगतार्तिनाशिनीं भक्तवत्सला सुशोभना । कृष्णभक्तिप्रदायिनीं सर्वकामप्रदायिनीम् ॥ ७ ॥

Transliteration

Śaraṇagatārtināśinīṃ bhaktavatsalā suśobhanā | Kṛṣṇabhaktipradāyinīṃ sarvakāmapradāyinīm || 7 ||

Meaning / Translation

She removes the suffering of those who seek her shelter and is affectionate to her followers. She grants the gift of Krishna-bhakti and fulfills all righteous desires.

यमुनाष्टकमिदं पुण्यं यः पठेत् स सुखी भवेत् । कृष्णलोकं स गच्छेत् स नित्यं कृष्णमर्चयेत् ॥ ८ ॥

Transliteration

Yamunāṣṭakam idaṃ puṇyaṃ yaḥ paṭhet sa sukhī bhavet | Kṛṣṇalokaṃ sa gacchet sa nityaṃ kṛṣṇamarcayet || 8 ||

Meaning / Translation

Whoever recites this meritorious Yamuna Ashtakam will attain great happiness. Such a person will reach the supreme abode of Krishna and will eternally worship Him.
