- 2Wake up daily at Brahma Muhurta and practice light yoga or stretching to prepare the body for cold water
- 3Take a sankalpa (vow) mentally or verbally: state your name, gotra, purpose (e.g., 'for purification of karma', 'for ancestors' peace', 'for spiritual progress')
- 4Trim nails, shave/trim hair if customary in your tradition, and bathe at home before departure
- 5Pack all samagri in a clean bag; keep dry clothes separate in waterproof pouch
- 6Consult a panchang or local priest to confirm exact snan muhurta for your chosen day
- 7Arrange travel and accommodation well in advance; Prayagraj is extremely crowded during Magh Mela
- 8Carry minimal cash and valuables; use a money belt
- 9Inform family of your itinerary and expected return
- 10Mentally prepare for crowds, cold, and physical discomfort — cultivate patience and equanimity
Step-by-Step Vidhi
- 1Arrive at the Sangam ghat before sunrise; find a clean spot facing east or north
- 2Remove footwear and place it in designated area; keep valuables secure
- 3Sit quietly for a few minutes; regulate breath; invoke Ganga Mata, Yamuna Devi, Saraswati Devi, and the Trimurti mentally
- 4Apply chandan tilak on forehead, throat, chest, and arms; offer flowers and akshata to the river with folded hands
- 5Recite the Ganga Avahana Mantra (see mantras section) to invite the deity into the water
- 6Enter the water slowly, chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya' or 'Ganga Maiya Ki Jai'; immerse up to neck
- 7Take three full dips (or 5, 7, 11 as per your sankalpa), each time submerging the head completely
- 8After each dip, offer a handful of water (arghya) to Surya Deva facing east with the Surya Arghya Mantra
- 9Perform tarpan for ancestors (pitru tarpan) using black sesame seeds and water, facing south
- 10Come out of the water; dry yourself with towel; change into fresh dry clothes immediately
- 11Sit on the bank and perform japa of your guru mantra, Gayatri Mantra, or 'Om Namo Narayanaya' (minimum 108 times)
- 12Offer the prepared samagri (flowers, coconut, fruits, sweets) to the river or to a nearby temple deity
- 13Light ghee lamp and incense; perform aarti to Ganga Mata using camphor (see Ganga Aarti in mantras)
- 14Distribute prasad to fellow pilgrims, sadhus, and the needy
- 15Offer dakshina to any priest who assisted you; seek blessings from elders and sadhus
- 16Collect Ganga jal in your container for home use; seal it respectfully
- 17Before leaving, do a final pradakshina (circumambulation) of the Sangam area if possible
- 18Maintain silence (mauna) or speak only of spiritual matters for the rest of the day
- 19Eat only sattvic food; avoid sleeping during daytime; spend time in satsang, reading scripture, or meditation

Vrat Rules
- •Observe complete fast (nirjala) or partial fast (phalahar — fruits, milk, water) on the day of snan, as per capacity and tradition
- •Maintain celibacy (brahmacharya) for the day and preferably the entire Magh month
- •Sleep on the ground or a simple mat; avoid luxurious bedding
- •Speak truth, avoid gossip, criticism, and idle talk; observe mauna (silence) for as long as possible
- •Do not consume food cooked by others unless it is prasad; preferably eat self-cooked sattvic food
- •Avoid oil massage, shaving, cutting nails on the snan day (do these before)
- •Donate generously (anna dana, vastra dana, til dana) to brahmins, sadhus, and the poor
- •Read or listen to Magh Mahatmya, Bhagavata Purana, or Ramayana during the month
- •Perform daily snan at home before sunrise if not at Sangam, with Ganga jal added to bath water
Do's
- ✓Bathe with reverence, not as a recreational activity
- ✓Keep the ghats clean; do not litter; use designated changing rooms and toilets
- ✓Respect sadhus, elders, and fellow pilgrims; offer help to the elderly and disabled
- ✓Follow instructions of mela administration, police, and volunteers for safety
- ✓Carry a small first-aid kit and any personal medications
- ✓Drink warm water or herbal tea after the cold dip to prevent shock
- ✓Protect your head and ears from cold wind after bath
- ✓Offer prayers for universal welfare (loka kalyana), not just personal gain
Don'ts
- ✗Do not use soap, shampoo, or detergents in the river — it pollutes the sacred waters
- ✗Do not throw plastic, clothes, flowers in bulk, or non-biodegradable items into the Sangam
- ✗Do not push, shove, or create stampede risk; move calmly in crowds
- ✗Do not take selfies or videos in the water during the actual snan — it distracts from devotion
- ✗Do not argue with priests over dakshina; give as per your capacity with humility
- ✗Do not consume intoxicants, tobacco, or non-vegetarian food during the pilgrimage
- ✗Do not disrespect any tradition, sampradaya, or sadhu's practice even if unfamiliar
- ✗Do not leave children, elderly, or vulnerable persons unattended
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- •Treating the snan as a mere ritual without inner sankalpa or devotion
- •Bathing at the wrong time (after sunrise) missing the Brahma Muhurta potency
- •Skipping the post-snan japa, tarpan, and aarti — reducing the ritual to just a dip
- •Wearing synthetic clothes that don't dry quickly, leading to illness
- •Carrying heavy luggage into the snan area — risk of loss and hindrance
- •Ignoring health conditions (heart, BP, respiratory) that make cold immersion dangerous
- •Failing to purify the home and self before and after the pilgrimage
- •Not offering dakshina or seva — the circuit of giving completes the merit
Regional Variations
- •In North India (especially UP, Bihar, MP), Magh Mela at Prayagraj is the primary observance; kalpavas (month-long stay) is common
- •In Bengal and Odisha, Maghi Purnima snan at Gangasagar (Sagar Island) is equally emphasized
- •In South India, the equivalent is Thai Masam (Tamil) / Magha Masam snan in sacred rivers like Kaveri, Godavari, Tungabhadra
- •In Maharashtra, Maghi Purnima snan at Trimbakeshwar or other Godavari ghats is observed
- •Gujaratis observe Magh Snan at Somnath, Dwarka, or local rivers with special til-gud dana
- •Nepalese Hindus perform Magh Snan at Devghat, Barahakshetra, and other Triveni sangams
- •Some sampradayas (e.g., Ramanandi, Niranjani Akhara) have specific processions and shahi snan protocols
- •Householders may observe only the key 4–5 parva snan days; sadhus often stay for the full month (kalpavas)
