Mantras

Guidelines

• •Maintain mental purity while performing the gesture.
• •Avoid performing these greetings with a sense of performative ego.
• •Ensure the intention (Bhava) is directed toward the divinity, not just the person.

Do's

• ✓Maintain eye contact before bowing in Namaskar.
• ✓Use both hands when touching the feet of elders.
• ✓Perform the gesture with a slight smile and a peaceful countenance.
• ✓Recite a silent mantra to center yourself.

Don'ts

• ✗Do not perform Namaskar with hands folded loosely or lazily.
• ✗Do not use Namaskar as a way to show social superiority.
• ✗Do not rush through the gesture without mental presence.
• ✗Avoid performing Pranam in an irreverent or mocking manner.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• •Focusing only on the physical movement and neglecting the internal devotion (Bhava).
• •Using the wrong level of greeting (e.g., using a casual wave instead of Namaskar for an elder).
• •Performing the gesture while distracted by mobile phones or other tasks.

Regional Variations

• •Charan Sparsh: Very common in North India, where one touches the feet of elders.
• •Namaskaram: The common term used in South India (Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka).
• •Pranam: Widely used in West Bengal and Eastern India, often involving a deeper bow.
• •Folding hands at the forehead: Some traditions involve bringing the Anjali Mudra to the forehead rather than the heart.
