Required Samagri (Materials)

Preparation Steps

1. 1Identify the North-East (Ishan Kona), East, or North sector of your home for setting up the Pooja Room.
2. 2Thoroughly clean and mop the selected area with water mixed with a small amount of Gangajal and rock salt to dispel residual negative energy.
3. 3Ensure proper ventilation and lighting so that natural morning sunlight can enter the prayer area.
4. 4Paint or decorate the room using auspicious colors such as light yellow, white, light blue, or soft orange.
5. 5Place a raised wooden or marble altar (Sinhasan) along the eastern or northern wall so deities face West or South (allowing the devotee to face East or North while praying).
6. 6Purify all copper, brass, and silver puja items using lemon, pitambari, or fresh water, and spread a clean red or yellow cloth over the altar base.

Step-by-Step Vidhi

1. 11. Shuddhi & Sankalpa: Take a purification bath, wear clean traditional attire, sit on an asana (prayer mat), and make a formal Sankalpa (intention) for establishing the holy space.
2. 22. Kalash Sthapana: Fill a copper or brass Kalash with water, add a drop of Gangajal, akshata, a coin, and betel nut. Place mango leaves in the neck and top it with a coconut wrapped in red cloth.
3. 33. Devata Avahan: Carefully place the idols/pictures of Lord Ganesha, your Kula Devata, and Ishta Devata on the cloth-covered platform. Offer invocation prayers to invoke divine presence into the space.
4. 44. Abhishekam / Snana: Gently clean murtis with Gangajal or perform a brief symbolic Panchamrit Abhishekam (if metal murtis are used), followed by wiping them dry with a clean cloth.
5. 55. Tilak & Alankara: Apply Chandan and Kumkum to the murtis, adorn them with fresh flower garlands, and place Tulsi leaves at the feet of Lord Vishnu/Krishna or Bilva leaves for Lord Shiva.
6. 66. Deepa & Dhupa Prajvalan: Light a cow ghee diya on the right side of the altar and an incense stick/dhoop on the left side to purify the subtle environment.
7. 77. Naivedya & Aarti: Offer fresh fruits, sweets, and water as Naivedyam. Ring the bell with the left hand while waving the Aarti lamp clockwise with the right hand, singing devotional hymns.
8. 88. Kshama Prarthana: Conclude with a prayer seeking forgiveness for any unintended procedural errors, distributing the blessed Prasad to family members.

Mantras

Do's

• ✓Establish the Pooja Room in the North-East (Ishan Kona), East, or North part of your home.
• ✓Face East or North while performing daily prayers and reciting mantras.
• ✓Keep the altar elevated above ground level so deities are at eye level or higher when seated.
• ✓Maintain bright, warm, and natural light within the prayer space.
• ✓Ring a small brass bell while performing Aarti to dissipate negative acoustic frequencies.
• ✓Ensure all guest room or Yatri Nivas bookings during pilgrimages are made near holy temple premises to facilitate early morning darshan.

Don'ts

• ✗Do not build or place a Pooja Room directly under or adjacent to a bathroom or toilet.
• ✗Avoid placing a home altar underneath a staircase or in a dark basement.
• ✗Do not place pictures of deceased ancestors (Pitrudevatas) inside the main Pooja altar with the deities.
• ✗Do not keep broken, cracked, or chipped idols (Khandit murtis) in the home mandir.
• ✗Avoid cluttering the prayer room with non-religious storage items, footwear, or trash bins.
• ✗Do not face South while praying or establishing deity platforms.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• •Placing too many idols of the same deity in a single altar space, which creates energetic crowding.
• •Using synthetic or chemical incense that causes heavy smoke and irritation instead of natural herbal dhoop.
• •Leaving withered flowers or stale water in the Kalash for multiple days.
• •Positioning the Pooja Room inside a primary bedroom where personal or physical intimacy takes place.
• •Booking pilgrimage lodging without verifying proximity to temple gates, resulting in missed morning pujas.

Regional Variations

• •In South India, sacred home temples (Pooja Araikgal) feature elaborate wooden carvings (Teak/Rosewood), oil lamps with five wicks (Kuthuvilakku), and intricate Kolam/Rangoli designs at the entrance.
• •In North India, marble temples with delicate jali lattice work are highly favored, featuring brass swing altars (Jhulas) for Bal Gopal.
• •In West Bengal and Eastern regions, dedicated altar spaces often emphasize brass lamps, conch shell blowing (Shankhadhwani), and dedicated spaces for Sri Ramakrishna, Maa Sarada, or Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
• •During Teerth Yatra, regional Dharamshalas and mathas cater to specific sampradayas (e.g., Ramanuja Mathas, Gaudiya Mathas, Shaiva Peethas), offering tailored lodging and prasadam.
