Preparation Steps

1. 1Wake up during the Brahma Muhurta (early morning before sunrise).
2. 2Take a ritual bath and wear clean, preferably light-colored or white clothes.
3. 3Clean the puja area or the household temple thoroughly.
4. 4Prepare the Panchamrit if you intend to perform Abhishekam.
5. 5Gather all the puja samagri (materials) in a neat arrangement to avoid interruptions during the ritual.
6. 6Set a calm and meditative intention (Sankalpa) for the fast.

Step-by-Step Vidhi

1. 1Sankalpa: Sit facing East or North. Take a little water in your palm and make a solemn vow to observe the Somavar Vrat for your specific desire or for spiritual growth.
2. 2Deep Prajvalan: Light the Diya and incense sticks to invite the divine presence.
3. 3Abhishekam: Perform the sacred bath of the Shiva Lingam. Slowly pour Gangajal, then milk, then curd, honey, ghee, and sugar. This sequence is known as Panchamrit Abhishekam. Ensure the water/milk flows smoothly over the Lingam.
4. 4Shringar: After Abhishekam, wipe the Lingam gently with a clean cloth. Apply Chandan (sandalwood paste) and Vibhuti. Offer Bel Patra, Dhatura, and fresh flowers. Note: Always place Bel Patra with the smooth side facing the Lingam.
5. 5Arati: Perform the Arati of Lord Shiva with a camphor lamp or ghee lamp, singing devotional hymns.
6. 6Katha Path: Sit quietly and listen to, or read aloud, the Somavar Vrat Katha. This is a vital part of the ritual to internalize the spiritual essence of the fast.
7. 7Mantras: Chant the Shiva Panchakshari Mantra or other relevant mantras 108 times using a Rudraksha mala.
8. 8Prasad: Offer fruits and sweets to the deity. After the pooja, distribute the prasad among family members.
9. 9Breaking the Fast: The fast is typically broken in the evening after the sunset prayers, often with a simple, Satvik meal (without onion and garlic).
