Significance

Konark is a supreme expression of Surya worship, celebrating the Sun as the source of light, life and time. Its precise astronomical design — the wheels marking the hours, the temple oriented to catch the first rays of dawn — reflects the deep scientific and spiritual knowledge of its builders. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands among the finest achievements of Indian art and temple architecture. The annual Konark Dance Festival keeps its cultural legacy alive.

About

Built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, the Konark temple was designed as the gigantic chariot of Surya sweeping across the heavens. Its 24 intricately sculpted wheels double as functional sundials, and the whole structure is covered with breathtaking carvings of deities, dancers, musicians, animals and scenes of everyday life. Though the main sanctum tower has collapsed over the centuries, the surviving Jagamohana (assembly hall) remains awe-inspiring. One of the great wheels of Konark has become a national emblem, appearing on Indian currency and the government's insignia.
