The Modhera temple is one of the greatest surviving examples of Surya (Sun God) worship in India and of the sublime Maru-Gurjara architectural tradition. Its astronomical alignment reflects the deep integration of science, art and devotion in ancient Indian temple-building. As a protected heritage monument, it embodies the golden age of Solanki-era craftsmanship. It draws visitors for its beauty, history and cultural festivals.
Built in 1026 CE by King Bhimdev I of the Solanki (Chaulukya) dynasty, the Modhera Sun Temple is a marvel of stone craftsmanship, comprising the Surya Kund step-tank, the pillared Sabha Mandap (assembly hall) and the Guda Mandap (shrine hall). The great rectangular tank, ringed by 108 miniature shrines and elegant terraced steps, is one of the finest of its kind in India. The temple was oriented with such precision that at the equinoxes the first rays of the rising sun would fall directly upon the sanctum. Though no longer a site of daily worship, it stands as a stunning monument, celebrated with the annual Modhera Dance Festival.
