The Lament of the Devas

Original

ततस्तु द्युतिमान् देवराजः संप्रयुक्तः। असुरैर्विजितः सर्वैः स्ववशः शक्तिवान् नरः॥

Transliteration

Tatastu dyutimān deva-rājaḥ samprayuktaḥ | Asair-vijitaḥ sarvaiḥ sva-vaśaḥ śaktivān naraḥ ||

Meaning / Translation

Then, the illustrious King of Gods, Indra, being engaged in battle, was defeated by all the demons, becoming helpless and stripped of his power.

The Manifestation of the Divine Light

ततस्तु विष्णुरब्रवीत्। तस्मात् तव मिलित-तेजसा देवी प्रकटः भवेत्॥

Transliteration

Tatastu viṣṇur-abravīt | Tasmāt tava milita-tejasā devī prakaṭaḥ bhavet ||

Meaning / Translation

Then Vishnu said: Therefore, from the combined effulgence (Tejas) of all the gods, a Goddess shall manifest.

ततस्तु सर्वदेवानां तेजोऽभिसर्जितं यथा। एकं स्त्रीरुपं दृष्ट्वा देवराजः स विस्मयितः॥

Transliteration

Tatastu sarva-devānām tejo-'bhisaṛjitaṃ yathā | Ekaṃ strī-rūpaṃ dṛṣṭvā deva-rājaḥ sa vismayitaḥ ||

Meaning / Translation

As the combined light of all the gods was emitted, Indra and the other gods were astonished to see a single female form emerging from that brilliance.

The Description of the Goddess's Splendor

महीसासुरमर्दिनीं च तपसा प्राप्तकामिनीम्। सुवर्णवर्णां महाभागां चण्डमुण्डविनाशिनीम्॥

Transliteration

Mahīṣāsura-mardinīṃ ca tapasā prāpta-kāminīm | Suvarṇa-varṇāṃ mahābhāgāṃ caṇḍa-muṇḍa-vināśinīm ||

Meaning / Translation

The slayer of Mahishasura, who attained her form through penance, possessing a golden complexion, of great glory, and the destroyer of Chanda and Munda.

त्रिशूलं चक्रमुदण्डं शङ्खं चोत्पलमण्डितम्। धनुः शरैश्च बाणैश्च शस्त्रैः सुशोभिताम्॥

Transliteration

Triśūlaṃ cakram-udaṇḍaṃ śaṅkhaṃ cotpala-maṇḍitam | Dhanuḥ śaraiśca bāṇaiśca śastrais suśobhitām ||

Meaning / Translation

She was adorned with weapons: a trident, a discus, a staff, a conch, a lotus, a bow, arrows, and various other martial implements.

ततस्तत्सर्वदेवानां तेजसा सन्निविष्टा सा। महिषासुरं हन्तीति गर्जितं करालवाचसा॥

Transliteration

Tatastat-sarva-devānām tejasā sanniviṣṭā sā | Mahiṣāsuraṃ hantīti garjitaṃ karāla-vācasā ||

Meaning / Translation

Embodying the combined light of all the gods, she roared with a terrible voice, declaring that she would slay the demon Mahishasura.

महिषासुरं हत्वा देवी देवानन्दमवापयत्। तदा सर्वे च देवाः प्रसन्नाः सुतान् सन्तु॥

Transliteration

Mahiṣāsuraṃ hatvā devī devānandam-avāpayat | Tadā sarve ca devāḥ prasannāḥ sutān santu ||

Meaning / Translation

After slaying Mahishasura, the Goddess brought joy to all the gods. Then all the deities, being pleased, offered their salutations.
