Preparation Steps

1. 1Bathe and wear clean, preferably traditional clothing.
2. 2Clean the place of recitation thoroughly; sprinkle Ganga water if available.
3. 3Set up a small altar with an image or idol of Lord Vishnu in Matsya form, or a Saligrama stone.
4. 4Arrange the samagri neatly: place the Purana text on a wooden stand (pustaka sthandila) at a higher level.
5. 5Light the lamp and incense; offer flowers, sandalwood, and tulsi to the deity.
6. 6Invoke the Guru parampara, Lord Ganesha (for obstacle removal), and Goddess Saraswati (for wisdom).
7. 7Perform achamana (sipping water with mantras) and pranayama to purify body and mind.
8. 8Take a sankalpa (solemn resolve) stating the purpose, duration, and dedication of the recitation.

Steps

1. 1Begin with the Mangalacharana: recite the opening invocation verses of the Matsya Purana (e.g., 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' followed by the Purana's own mangala shloka).
2. 2Recite the Matsya Moola Mantra (see mantras section) 108 times using the mala.
3. 3Read the selected chapters of the Matsya Purana aloud, clearly and with devotion. If doing a full Parayana, follow the traditional order of 291 chapters over a set number of days.
4. 4After each chapter or section, offer a flower or tulsi leaf to the deity as pushpanjali.
5. 5Periodically sprinkle water from the kalasha around the area to maintain purity.
6. 6Upon completion of the day's reading, perform aarti with the lamp, conch, and bell while singing a Vishnu aarti or the Matsya Purana Phala Shruti verses.
7. 7Distribute prasad to all present and partake yourself as divine grace.
8. 8Conclude with the Shanti Patha: 'Om Shanti Shanti Shantih' and offer pranams to the Guru, the deity, and the scripture.
