Introduction

The Narmada River, reverently addressed as Narmada Maiya or Ma Narmada, flows as the lifeline of Central India and stands among the seven most sacred rivers (Sapta Sindhu) in Hindu tradition. Originating from the Amarkantak plateau in the Maikal Hills of Madhya Pradesh at an elevation of approximately 1,057 meters, she traverses 1,312 kilometers westward through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat before merging into the Arabian Sea at the Gulf of Khambhat. Unlike most Indian rivers that flow eastward toward the Bay of Bengal, Narmada's unique westward journey symbolizes her distinct spiritual stature — she is the only river in India where a complete circumambulation (Parikrama) is prescribed as a supreme spiritual sadhana, granting liberation (moksha) to the sincere seeker.

Significance

The spiritual significance of Narmada transcends mere geographical reverence; she is considered the embodiment of purity, compassion, and divine grace. In the Skanda Purana's Reva Khanda, Lord Shiva declares that the mere sight (darshan) of Narmada destroys sins accumulated over countless lifetimes, while her waters possess the power to grant both worldly prosperity (artha, kama) and ultimate liberation (moksha). The river is uniquely honored as the daughter of Lord Shiva (Shiva-suta), born from his intense tapas and sweat during his cosmic dance, making her intrinsically connected to Shaiva tradition. Simultaneously, Vaishnava texts like the Bhagavata Purana extol her as the giver of bhakti, and the Narmada Mahatmya recounts how even the Trimurti — Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara — worship her banks.

Auspicious Time

The ideal period for Narmada Parikrama is from Kartik Purnima (October-November) to Vaishakh Purnima (April-May), avoiding the monsoon months (June-September) when the river swells dangerously. Many pilgrims begin on Kartik Purnima or Makar Sankranti. Daily rituals can be performed year-round, with special merit on Narmada Jayanti (Magha Shukla Saptami), Somvati Amavasya, and solar/lunar eclipses.

Required Samagri (Materials)

Copper or brass kalash (pot) for carrying Narmada jal
Rudraksha mala (108 beads) for japa
White cotton dhoti/veshti and upper garment (for men); simple cotton saree (for women)
Tulsi mala or sandalwood mala
Incense sticks (aggarbatti) and camphor (kapur)
Ghee lamp (diya) with cotton wicks
Fresh flowers (preferably white or yellow), bel patra, durva grass
Fruits, coconut, jaggery, raw rice (akshata)
Panchamrit ingredients: milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar
Waterproof walking shoes, staff (lathi), wide-brimmed hat
Simple bedding, water bottle, basic medicines
Narmada Parikrama guidebook or map

Preparation Steps

  1. 1Take a firm sankalpa (vow) before Guru or deity, specifying the type of Parikrama (full, half, or khand)
  2. 2Obtain blessings from family elders, Guru, and local temple priest
  3. 3Complete any pending shraaddha or pitru karma before departure
  4. 4Arrange for a trusted companion or join an organized Parikrama group (sangha)
  5. 5Get medical check-up; carry prescription medicines and first-aid kit
  6. 6Inform local police stations along the route about your pilgrimage (mandatory in some districts)
  7. 7Prepare a detailed route map marking ghats, temples, ashrams, medical facilities, and safe halting points
  8. 8Pack minimal, sattvic supplies; avoid leather, onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food
  9. 9Practice walking 10-15 km daily for at least a month before departure
  10. 10Memorize key mantras: Narmada Ashtakam, Narmada Stotram, and Om Narmadai Namah

Steps

  1. 1Begin at the sacred source: Amarkantak (Narmada Udgam Kund). Perform abhishekam of the Narmada Shila with panchamrit, offer flowers, bel patra, and light ghee lamp. Recite Narmada Ashtakam and take sankalpa for Parikrama.
  2. 2Collect Narmada jal in kalash from the source; this jal will be offered back at the conclusion. Tie a sacred thread (mauli) on wrist as Parikrama bandhan.
  3. 3Walk downstream on the south bank (dakshina tat) toward the sea, keeping Narmada always on your right side (pradakshina). This is the primary Parikrama route covering ~2,600 km round trip.
  4. 4At each major ghat (Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, Bharuch, etc.), perform snana (bath), offer arghya to Surya, do pitru tarpan, and worship at ancient temples.
  5. 5Maintain mauna (silence) as much as possible; engage in constant japa of 'Om Narmadai Namah' or 'Narmade Har'. Avoid idle talk, criticism, and negative thoughts.
  6. 6Accept only sattvic bhiksha (alms) or simple meals offered by ashrams/villagers; never refuse prasad. Sleep on ground or simple bedding; no luxuries.
  7. 7Cross to the north bank (uttara tat) only at designated points (usually near Omkareshwar or Bharuch) to begin the return journey upstream, keeping Narmada on your left.
  8. 8On the return leg, continue japa, seva (service to fellow pilgrims), and darshan of temples missed earlier. The return is considered equally meritorious.
  9. 9Complete the circle at Amarkantak. Offer the kalash jal back to the source, perform purna ahuti homa, feed brahmins and sadhus, and seek forgiveness for any lapses.
  10. 10Conclude with Guru dakshina, distribution of prasad, and sharing of Parikrama experiences to inspire others.

Meaning: I bow to the lotus feet of Goddess Narmada, worshipped by gods and demons, of divine form, bestower of grace on devotees, remover of worldly fear. She who dwells in Vindhya's caves, of vast fame, mother of the universe, whose lotus feet are worshipped by all, giver of sorrowlessness, boon-granter, of pure waters — I bow to her feet. Served by Sage Kapila, like Kamadhenu (wish-fulfilling cow), ocean of compassion, golden-hued, remover of Kali Yuga's impurities, abode of grace — I bow. Beloved friend of Mahadeva, destroyer of great sins, of great illusion and ocean, greatly honored, giver of supreme merit, of beautiful waves — I bow. Whose feet are served by enemies of gods, whose feet are the boat to cross over, whose feet are worshipped by Indra, praised by gods, beautiful-formed, destroyer of gods' enemies, beloved of Indra — I bow. Destroyer of sinners' sins, augmenter of the pious' merit, purifier of the pure, worshipped by those fearing sin, fulfiller of all desires, embodiment of supreme bliss — I bow. Destroyer of evil planets and constellations, ferry across the difficult ocean of samsara, giver of rare vision, destroyer of sorrow and grief, friend of the humble, ocean of mercy, O Goddess of Gods, salutations to you. Whoever recites this hymn with devotion while residing on Narmada's banks becomes free from all sins and attains Vishnu's abode.

Narmada Stotram (Short Version)

Om Narmadāyai namaḥ । Narmadā Narmade devi trailokyapāvani bhava । Pāpaṁ nāśaya me devi puṇyaṁ kuru mamātmanaḥ ॥ Snānena tava vārīṇāṁ sparśenāpi Janārdana । Pāpaṁ praṇaśyati tatkṣaṇāt puṇyaṁ caiva pravardhate ॥

Meaning: Salutations to Narmada. O Goddess Narmada, purifier of the three worlds, destroy my sins and grant merit to my soul. By bathing in your waters or even by mere touch, O Janardana (Vishnu, who resides in her), sins perish instantly and merit increases.

Narmada Parikrama Sankalpa Mantra

Meaning: Om, that is the Truth. Today, in the second half of Brahma's life, in the Shweta Varaha Kalpa, in the Vaivasvata Manvantara, in the 28th Kali Yuga, in the first phase of Kali, in Jambudvipa, in Bharatavarsha, in Bharata Khanda, south of Mount Meru, on the banks of Narmada, at the holy place of Amarkantak, I resolve to perform bath in the sacred Narmada waters, worship of her feet, and the circumambulation of Narmada. May all this be for the pleasure of the Supreme Lord.

Narmada Aarti (Traditional)

Meaning: Victory to Mother Narmada! You are the destroyer of sins, the giver of merit. You manifested in the lap of Vindhyachal, born from Lord Shiva's sweat. Sage Kapila performed tapasya on your banks; you purified the three worlds. By your darshan, all sins are cut; by your waters, all cross the ocean of samsara. Omkareshwar and Maheshwar grace your banks; devotees throng there eternally. Whoever sings Mother Narmada's aarti, says Bhajananda Swami, attains their heart's desire.

Guidelines

  • Observe strict brahmacharya (celibacy) throughout the Parikrama
  • Maintain mauna (silence) for maximum periods; speak only when necessary and truthfully
  • Eat only once daily (ekabhukta) or follow fruit/milk diet (phalahar); no grains after noon in some traditions
  • Sleep on ground without mattress; use only simple cotton bedding
  • Bathe in Narmada daily at brahma muhurta (pre-dawn); if impossible, do manasik snana with Narmada jal
  • Perform pitru tarpan and pind daan at designated tirthas (especially at Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Bharuch)
  • Carry no money; depend on bhiksha (alms) and prasad; this cultivates detachment
  • Do not cross the river by boat/bridge except at designated crossing points; the Parikrama must be on foot
  • Never turn back; the Parikrama must be continuous without breaking the circle
  • Complete the full circuit; abandoning midway is considered highly inauspicious unless due to severe illness/death

Do's

  • Carry a Narmada Shila (banalinga) for daily worship if not visiting temples daily
  • Offer arghya to Surya at sunrise facing the river
  • Chant 'Narmade Har' or 'Om Narmadai Namah' continuously while walking
  • Serve fellow pilgrims (seva) — carry water, massage feet, share food
  • Respect all sadhus, sanyasis, and elderly pilgrims; seek their blessings
  • Plant tulsi or bel saplings at ashrams along the route as seva
  • Keep a daily journal of experiences, insights, and places visited
  • Perform Gau dan (cow donation) or annadan (food donation) at conclusion if possible
  • Maintain environmental purity; carry back all non-biodegradable waste
  • Seek permission before photographing sadhus, temples, or private ashrams

Don'ts

  • Do not use soap, shampoo, or detergents in the river; bathe with water only
  • Do not throw plastic, flowers with threads, or non-biodegradable items in Narmada
  • Do not argue, criticize, or engage in worldly discussions; maintain spiritual focus
  • Do not accept lifts in vehicles; the Parikrama must be on foot (exceptions only for medical emergencies)
  • Do not stay in luxury hotels; use ashrams, dharamshalas, or open ghats
  • Do not consume alcohol, tobacco, onion, garlic, or non-vegetarian food
  • Do not cut hair, nails, or shave during Parikrama (some traditions allow on specific tithis)
  • Do not cross the river to the other bank except at traditional crossing points
  • Do not disrespect local customs, temple rules, or forest regulations
  • Do not give up midway; if health fails, perform manasik Parikrama (mental circumambulation) with Guru's guidance

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Starting Parikrama without proper sankalpa and Guru blessing
  • Walking on the wrong bank (must keep Narmada on right during downstream, left during upstream)
  • Skipping the return leg (uttara tat) thinking downstream alone completes it
  • Using vehicles for difficult stretches, breaking the 'padayatra' vow
  • Carrying excessive luggage, leading to physical exhaustion and early abandonment
  • Neglecting daily japa and rituals, treating it as mere trekking
  • Disrespecting the river by polluting or using it for laundry/washing utensils
  • Not carrying sufficient Narmada jal from source for final offering
  • Ignoring health warnings during extreme weather or flood conditions
  • Failing to perform purna ahuti and concluding rites at Amarkantak

Regional Variations

  • Gujarati tradition: Emphasis on Bharuch and Chanod tirthas; Parikrama often starts/ends at Bharuch for local devotees
  • Maharashtrian tradition: Strong focus on Omkareshwar and Maheshwar; many undertake 'Khand Parikrama' (sectional) over years
  • Madhya Pradesh local practice: Shorter 'Panchkroshi' (5 kos ~15 km) Parikramas around specific tirthas like Amarkantak, Omkareshwar
  • Narmada Parikrama by boat: Allowed only for physically disabled/elderly with Guru permission; not considered full Parikrama
  • Narmada Parikrama by vehicle: Some organizations offer 'car Parikrama' for those unable to walk; traditionalists consider this symbolic only
  • Aghora/Naga sadhu tradition: Perform Parikrama in extreme austerity — naked, eating only bhiksha, sleeping on burning ghats
  • Householder tradition: Often perform 'Sthula Parikrama' — visiting 108 major tirthas by vehicle over multiple trips
  • Women's Parikrama groups: All-female sanghas with female guides; modified rules for safety and privacy
  • International devotees: ISKCON and other groups organize supported Parikramas with medical/language assistance

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the total distance of the complete Narmada Parikrama?
The complete Narmada Parikrama covers approximately 2,600–3,000 kilometers (depending on the exact route taken on both banks) and typically takes 3 to 3.5 years if done continuously on foot. Most householders complete it in sections over many years.
Can women perform Narmada Parikrama alone?
Traditionally, women perform Parikrama in groups (sanghas) with a male guardian or female guide for safety. Many all-women groups now undertake it successfully. Scriptures do not prohibit women; the Skanda Purana mentions women attaining moksha through Narmada Parikrama.
What is a Narmada Shila (Banalinga) and why is it special?
Narmada Shila or Banalinga are naturally formed, elliptical Shiva lingas found exclusively in the Narmada riverbed. They are considered swayambhu (self-manifested) and do not require prana pratishtha. Worshipping one Banalinga equals worshipping all Shiva lingas. Pilgrims often collect one at the source and worship it daily during Parikrama.
Is it mandatory to start Parikrama only from Amarkantak?
Traditionally, yes — the Parikrama begins and ends at the source (Narmada Udgam Kund, Amarkantak). However, some traditions allow starting from Omkareshwar or other major tirthas if one cannot reach Amarkantak, with the understanding to complete the full circle eventually.
What happens if a pilgrim dies during Parikrama?
Dying during Narmada Parikrama is considered supremely auspicious — the soul attains moksha directly. The body is cremated on the riverbank with full honors, and the Parikrama is considered complete for that soul. Fellow pilgrims perform the final rites.
Can non-Hindus or foreigners undertake Narmada Parikrama?
Yes, with sincere intent and respect for traditions. Many foreigners have completed it. They should follow the same rules (vegetarian, celibacy, no intoxicants, foot-walking) and ideally go with an experienced guide or group. The river's grace is for all beings.
