Significance

Chandi Devi is revered as a powerful, victorious form of Durga whose slaying of the demons symbolises the triumph of divine energy over evil. As a Siddh Peetha, it is believed to fulfil the wishes of sincere devotees. Its association with Adi Shankaracharya and its dramatic hilltop setting enhance its sanctity. It is an essential part of the Haridwar Devi pilgrimage, especially during Navratri and the Kumbh Mela.

About

The Chandi Devi temple sits high on the Neel Parvat across the Ganga from Haridwar, reached by ropeway or a roughly 3 km trek through wooded slopes. The current temple was built in 1929 by the king of Kashmir, though the principal idol is believed to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya, and the site is far more ancient. Dedicated to Chandi, a fierce form of Durga, the shrine honours the goddess who destroyed the demon generals Shumbha and Nishumbha at this very hill. Along with Mansa Devi and Maya Devi, it completes the triangle of Siddh Peethas that pilgrims visit in Haridwar.
