Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

The temple commemorates one of the most beloved episodes of Hindu mythology: when the gods and demons churned the cosmic ocean, the deadly Halahala poison arose, and Shiva drank it to save creation, holding it in his throat, which turned blue (Neelkanth). It thus symbolises supreme self-sacrifice and compassion. Worship here, especially during the Shravan month, is considered highly auspicious. It is one of the principal pilgrimages around Rishikesh.

Perched at about 1,330 m amid dense forest between the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, the Neelkanth Mahadev temple is one of the most revered Shiva shrines of the region. Its colourful gopuram is decorated with sculpted scenes from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), and a natural spring nearby is used by pilgrims. Devotees combine the visit with a scenic trek or drive from Rishikesh, and offer bel leaves, coconut and flowers to the Lord. The tranquil forest setting and the powerful legend give the temple a deeply meditative atmosphere.
