Significance

Kaal Bhairav is venerated as the Kotwal of Kashi, the guardian who protects the holy city and administers divine justice. Tradition holds that a pilgrimage to Varanasi is incomplete without seeking his permission and blessing. As a manifestation of Shiva's fierce, time-devouring aspect (Kaal), he removes fear, sin and negativity. The temple is a vital part of the sacred geography of Kashi.

About

Kaal Bhairav is one of the most atmospheric and authentic shrines of Varanasi, its deity a formidable form of Shiva mounted on a dog, adorned with silver and marigold. Devotees receive a black protective thread (kala dhaga) as a blessing, and — uniquely among Hindu temples — the deity is traditionally offered liquor as prasad. As the guardian of Kashi, Bhairav is believed to oversee the city and its dharma, dispensing justice to sinners. The temple's intense, ancient ambience sets it apart from the grander shrines of the city.
