Kaila Devi is venerated as a powerful protective mother-goddess and clan deity, sought for courage, protection and the fulfilment of vows. The temple is one of the most important Shakti centres of eastern Rajasthan. The Chaitra Lakhi Mela is among the largest religious fairs in the state.

परिचय

The Kaila Devi temple stands amid the Trikut hills on the banks of the Kalisil river in Karauli district. The sanctum enshrines two idols side by side — Kaila Devi (a form of Mahalakshmi/Chamunda) and Bohra Devi — worshipped with deep devotion by pilgrims from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The goddess is the tutelary deity (kuldevi) of the erstwhile Karauli royal house and of numerous Rajput and other communities. During Chaitra Navratri the temple hosts the Lakhi Mela, a fortnight-long fair drawing lakhs of devotees who arrive on foot singing 'kankali' songs and offering coconuts and flags.
