Srirangam is the first and greatest of the 108 Divya Desams, the sacred abodes of Vishnu sung by the Alvar saints, and the spiritual capital of Sri Vaishnavism. Ranganatha, the reclining Lord, represents Vishnu sustaining the cosmos in yogic repose. The temple's association with Ramanuja makes it central to the philosophy of Vishishtadvaita. The Srirangam temple is a self-contained sacred city of seven concentric walled enclosures (prakaras) and 21 monumental gopurams, including the towering Rajagopuram, one of the tallest temple gateways in Asia. At its heart, Lord Ranganatha reclines in serene cosmic sleep within the golden-domed sanctum. The temple is the epicentre of Sri Vaishnavism, forever linked with the philosopher-saint Ramanujacharya, whose preserved form is venerated here. Its 21-day Vaikunta Ekadasi festival, when the 'gateway to heaven' (Paramapada Vasal) is opened, draws hundreds of thousands of devotees.
