About

Built by the great emperor Raja Raja Chola I and consecrated in 1010 CE, the 'Big Temple' (Peruvudaiyar Kovil) is a colossus of interlocking granite blocks raised without mortar. Its 66-metre vimana is crowned by a single 80-tonne capstone, and a monolithic Nandi bull of about 25 tonnes guards the sanctum. The temple walls carry magnificent Chola frescoes, inscriptions and sculptures that document the empire's art, dance and administration in exquisite detail. Now over a thousand years old, it remains an active place of worship and a symbol of Tamil civilisation's golden age.
