The Rockfort temples are among the most revered shrines of Tiruchirappalli, dedicated to Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, and to Shiva as Thayumanaswami. The dramatic hilltop setting and the legend linking it to the Ranganatha of Srirangam give it a special place in local devotion. The climb itself is regarded as an act of faith rewarded by the Lord's darshan and a sublime view. Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated here with great enthusiasm.
The Rockfort complex is built upon one of the oldest rock formations on earth, and the Ucchi Pillayar (Ganesha) temple sits at its very summit, reached by climbing 417 steps cut into the living rock. According to local legend, this is the spot where Lord Ganesha, having helped carry the Ranganatha idol at nearby Srirangam, ran to the hilltop. From the top, pilgrims are rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of Trichy, the Kaveri river and the vast Srirangam temple. Partway up the rock stands the ancient Thayumanaswami temple, dedicated to Shiva.
