Preparation Steps
- 1Observe a sattvic diet for at least 21 days before departure, avoiding onion, garlic, meat, alcohol, and intoxicants
- 2Perform daily Shiva puja at home with Om Namah Shivaya japa (minimum 108 times daily) to build spiritual momentum
- 3Seek blessings from family guru, elders, and the family deity (kula devata)
- 4Complete any pending ancestral rites (shraddha, tarpan) if possible
- 5Arrange for a trusted person to manage home affairs and care for dependents
- 6Get a medical check-up; ensure fitness for long travel and walking
- 7Study the route, major temple timings, and local customs of each region
- 8Pack light but include all samagri; use a sturdy backpack or suitcase with locks
- 9Inform bank and phone provider of travel; carry emergency cash and digital payment options
- 10Mentally prepare for simplicity, discomfort, and surrender — the yatra is a tapasya, not a vacation
Steps
- 1Begin at Rameswaram: Take a ritual bath in the 22 theerthams (holy tanks) within Ramanathaswamy Temple complex, starting with Agni Theertham (sea) and ending with Kodi Theertham. Offer prayers to Ramanathaswamy (Shiva) and Ramalingam (installed by Rama). Perform abhishekam with Ganga jal if carried from previous yatra.
- 2Offer special puja at the shrine of Goddess Parvathavardhini (consort of Ramanathaswamy) and seek permission (anugya) from the deity to undertake the yatra. Tie a sacred thread (kankanam) on the wrist as a vow.
- 3Visit Dhanushkodi (the tip of the island) where Rama built the bridge (Setu) to Lanka. Offer tarpan for ancestors in the sea. Collect a small amount of sand/sea water as a token of Setu.
- 4Travel northward, stopping at major Shaiva kshetras en route: Tirupati (Balaji), Srikalahasti (Vayu Linga), Kanchipuram (Ekambareswarar), Tiruvannamalai (Arunachaleswarar), Chidambaram (Nataraja), Thanjavur (Brihadeeswarar), Madurai (Meenakshi Sundareswarar), Rameswaram (already visited), then proceed via Chennai/Vijayawada to Hyderabad.
- 5Visit Srisailam (Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga) in Andhra Pradesh. Perform abhishekam and stay overnight if possible. Continue to Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh) — one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Attend the Bhasma Aarti at 4 AM.
- 6Proceed to Omkareshwar (Madhya Pradesh) on the Narmada. Perform Narmada parikrama (circumambulation) if time permits, or at least offer puja at the Jyotirlinga. Visit Maheshwar (Ahilyabai's temple) nearby.
- 7Travel to Varanasi (Kashi) via train/flight. On arrival, first take a dip in the Ganga at Manikarnika or Dashashwamedh Ghat at sunrise. Offer arghya to Surya and perform tarpan for ancestors.
- 8Visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Perform the complete Shodashopachara puja (16-step worship) or at least offer bilva leaves, milk, honey, and Ganga jal to the Jyotirlinga. Chant Shiva Sahasranama or Rudram.
- 9Visit the other major temples in Kashi: Annapurna Devi, Kaal Bhairav (Kotwal of Kashi), Vishalakshi, Durga Kund, Sankat Mochan Hanuman, and Tulsi Manas Mandir.
- 10Perform the Pancha Kroshi Yatra (50-mile circumambulation of Kashi) if physically able, or at least the Antargriha Yatra (inner circuit of 5 major temples). Offer pind daan at Manikarnika Ghat for departed ancestors.
- 11Conclude with a final bath in Ganga, offer the Setu sand/water brought from Rameswaram into the Ganga, symbolizing the union of Setu and Ganga. Distribute prasad, feed Brahmins and the poor (annadanam).
- 12Return home with Ganga jal for home puja. Share the spiritual merits (punya) of the yatra with all beings through sankalpa.

Guidelines
- •Maintain brahmacharya (celibacy) in thought, word, and deed throughout the yatra
- •Eat only once a day (ekabhukta) or follow a fruit/milk diet (phalahar) on major temple visit days
- •Avoid all non-vegetarian food, alcohol, tobacco, onion, garlic, and processed foods
- •Sleep on the floor or a simple mat; avoid luxury accommodations
- •Speak minimally; observe mauna (silence) for at least 2 hours daily, preferably during japa
- •Do not accept gifts or money; the yatra is an offering, not a transaction
- •Bathe daily before sunrise; wear clean, washed clothes for temple entry
- •Carry own water and prasad; do not consume food offered by strangers unless it is temple prasad
Do's
- ✓Carry a written sankalpa (resolve) stating the purpose of the yatra and offer it at Rameswaram and Kashi
- ✓Respect local customs, dress codes, and temple rules at every site
- ✓Offer dakshina (donation) to priests, temple staff, and the needy as per capacity
- ✓Chant Shiva mantras mentally while walking, traveling, or waiting
- ✓Keep a daily journal of experiences, dreams, and insights
- ✓Help fellow pilgrims, especially the elderly and disabled
- ✓Take environmental care — do not litter, use reusable bottles, avoid plastic
- ✓Learn a few basic phrases in local languages (Tamil, Telugu, Hindi) as a mark of respect
Don'ts

- ✗Do not argue with priests, security, or locals; practice patience and humility
- ✗Do not carry valuables or large sums of cash openly
- ✗Do not eat at non-vegetarian restaurants or consume food prepared without mantra

- ✗Do not criticize other sampradayas, rituals, or deities encountered en route
- ✗Do not treat the yatra as a sightseeing tour; maintain bhava (devotional mood) throughout
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- •Starting without proper physical preparation, leading to illness mid-yatra
- •Booking tight schedules with no buffer for delays, causing stress and missed rituals
- •Carrying excessive luggage, making travel burdensome
- •Neglecting daily japa and meditation, reducing the yatra to mere travel

- •Overlooking the importance of annadanam (feeding the poor) at Kashi
- •Not seeking forgiveness from family and guru before departure
- •Ignoring health warnings (altitude, heat, crowd) at specific locations
