Hanuman Garhi holds a place of special honour in Ayodhya, as tradition dictates that pilgrims seek Hanuman's blessings — as the devoted guardian of Rama — before proceeding to the Ram Janmabhoomi and other shrines. Hanuman is revered as the perfect devotee, protector against evil and remover of obstacles. The temple is thronged on Tuesdays and Saturdays and during Hanuman Jayanti. It is one of the most beloved and lively shrines of Ayodhya.
Hanuman Garhi is built in the form of a four-sided fort with circular bastions at each corner, reflecting the belief that Hanuman stood guard over Ayodhya, the city of his beloved Lord Rama. A climb of 76 steps leads to the sanctum, where the deity is enshrined as the child Hanuman seated on the lap of his mother, Maa Anjani. The temple, dating in its present form to the 18th century, buzzes with devotees offering laddus and chanting the Hanuman Chalisa. Its elevated position offers fine views over the holy town.
