Kainchi Dham lies in a bend of the road (the hairpin 'scissors', kainchi) beside the Shipra river amid the pine-clad hills near Nainital. Established in the 1960s by the revered saint Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji), the ashram centres on a Hanuman temple radiating deep calm, along with shrines to other deities and Baba's own seat. Neem Karoli Baba's teachings of love and service touched countless devotees, including well-known figures from around the world such as spiritual teacher Ram Dass, which has brought the ashram international renown. The annual Bhandara on 15 June, marking the temple's establishment day, sees thousands served free prasad.
