Kainchi Dham lies in a bend of the road (the hairpin 'scissors', kainchi) beside the Shipra river amid the pine-clad hills near Nainital. Established in the 1960s by the revered saint Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji), the ashram centres on a Hanuman temple radiating deep calm, along with shrines to other deities and Baba's own seat. Neem Karoli Baba's teachings of love and service touched countless devotees, including well-known figures from around the world such as spiritual teacher Ram Dass, which has brought the ashram international renown.
