The temple's deep association with the Mahabharata and the Pandavas' pre-war worship makes it one of the most spiritually resonant sites in Kurukshetra. Bathing in the sacred tank and worshipping Shiva here is believed to bring victory over one's inner and outer struggles. It is a key stop on the Kurukshetra pilgrimage circuit.
Sthaneshwar Mahadev stands beside a holy tank in Thanesar (ancient Sthanishvara), in the sacred land of Kurukshetra where the Bhagavad Gita was revealed. Tradition holds that the Pandavas, guided by Krishna, worshipped Lord Shiva here to seek his blessings before the great war. The lingam in the sanctum is believed to be swayambhu (self-manifested), and the adjoining sacred tank is used by pilgrims for ritual bathing. The temple was an important centre in the era of Emperor Harshavardhana, whose capital was at Thanesar.
